Purple clay — zisha, the distinctive material of Yixing teaware — is one of the most culturally resonant materials in the Chinese decorative tradition. Its particular properties (a natural clay that fires without glaze to a surface of extraordinary texture and density, that absorbs the teas brewed in or on it over time, developing a patina that is unique to the individual piece and its use history) make it the preferred material of serious tea practitioners in the gong fu cha tradition.
